Next time when you hear the word perfume, your imagination will have something related to women’s fragrance in particular as it is more feminine.

The history of perfumes is as old as human existence. Perfume is derived from the latin word "per fumus", which means through smoke. If we refer to the history of perfumes we get to know that the art of making perfumes began in ancient Mesopotamia and Egypt and was further refined by the Romans, the Persians and the Arabs. While perfume and perfumery also existed in East Asia, much of its fragrances were incense based.

The world's first testimony of a chemist is a person named Tapputi, a perfume maker who was mentioned in a Cuneiform tablet from the 2nd millennium BC in Mesopotamia. She distilled different types of oil, flowers and calamus with other aromatics ingredients then filter them back into distill several times before getting the pure perfumes. Perfume types reflect the concentration of aromatic compounds in a solvent, which in subtle fragrance is typically ethanol or sometimes a mix of water and ethanol. So even in our history it was more of a women’s fragrance that was associated with perfumes.

Perfume as such is not gender biased but still it is more feminine when we hear it. These days we see it as a fashion statement. The perfume brand which you wear speaks a lot about your overall personality. Many times a typical women’s fragrance helps you to identify her without even having to look at the person. As we are in the technological era the fragrance as such has undergone lot of changes ever since its evolution. Wearing branded perfumes makes the persona of an individual appear more rich, sophisticated and glamorous. The association of beauty and glamour of a celebrity is often the selling point of a women’s fragrance in the fashion industry.

Perfumes can be categorized in different fragrance segments like floral, oriental, citrus, chypre, green, Fougère, fresh etc. Women’s pay lot attention when it comes to choosing the right perfume. The fragrance gives them the choice to be someone very special. People apply perfumes behind the ears, insides of wrist, elbows, nape of the neck so that fragrance continues to spread. Often fragrances are termed as Eau de Parfum (EdP) which is concentrated than Eau de Toilette (EdT) and in turn Eau de Cologne (EdC). Most of the perfume varieties are sold as women fragrance except the Edc.
